NTSE (National Talent Search Examination) Exam Pattern

This article is an introductory to NTSE and will help you to focus on preparation for NTSE. NTSE is conducted by NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) for class VIII students. There are always a few things you will like to know about NTSE; why you should appear for it, the exam pattern, NTSE preparation, study materials etc.

About NTSE
National Talent Search Scheme is a flagship programme of the NCERT, started in the year 1963. The purpose of the scheme is to identify talented students and nurture their talent. Talent refers to the potentiality that manifests itself in a high level of performance in one or more specialized areas. NTSE also offers scholarships right from class VIII onwards until you complete Ph.D. In fact, it is one of the very few Catch-Them-Young programs launched by the government of India, which has been a resounding success.

Benefits of taking NTSE

You should definitely appear for NTSE for the below mentioned reasons.

a. Exposure to National Level Test:
This is one of the most important reasons. You get a very good exposure while appearing for this National Level Test, as the exam is very competitive. You have to pass through two stages (i) written test and (ii) interview. At this young age, you will get a clear focus for your career progress. This will also groom you for other National level competitive exams like IAS, CAT, GRE etc. It is very rare that a student who gets the NTSE scholarship is not able to clear other exams. later. You should definitely attempt this exam, just for experience, regardless of the results.

b. Recognition:
NTSE is one of the most prestigious exams in India. The moment you clear this exam, you get recognition at various levels. This also helps in career development and takes you ahead of others.

c. Monetary benefits:
You can support yourself by getting a scholarship of Rs.500 per month. The scholarship is provided up to Ph.D. level for general courses like Science, Social Science and Commerce and up to Post Graduation level for professional courses like Engineering, Management and Law.

Exam Pattern of NTSE
NTSE is held at two levels:
a. State Level: For the purpose of screening; only written test is conducted.
b. National Level: For final selection; a written test followed by an interview.

State Level examination is conducted by each State/UT to screen out students and to recommend the qualifying students to NCERT for National Level Examination.

Thus after NCERT brings out the advertisement regarding NTSE along with application form, the whole responsibility shifts to State Level. The State Liaison Officers accept the application forms, conduct the State Level examination and then recommend the list of qualifying students to NCERT.
